Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I drive U.S. 98 regularly and for the past several weeks it appears progress on the project has slowed. Why is that?
This is a resurfacing project, with lane closures limited to nighttime hours (8 p.m. to 5 a.m.). Restricting the lane closure times minimizes traffic impacts, but it can also makes it difficult for paving crews as they work to complete a project during the fall and winter months. Asphalt paving is a temperature sensitive activity and cooler nighttime weather can make it impossible to pave because of the temperature restrictions that govern when asphalt may be applied. Paving crews are continuing to work as nighttime temperatures allow.
What work is being performed on US 98?
A $4.7 million transportation improvement project is resurfacing an approximately five mile section of US 98 in Okaloosa County. The construction zone stretches from the Santa Rosa County line eastward to immediately west of Josie Road. (Josie Road is west of the Hurlburt field main gate.) The work will begin in April 2011 and is slated for completion near the end of the year.
How much will the work cost and who is paying for it?
The construction cost for this US 98 improvement project is approximately $4.7 million. The project is being funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.
Will there be any traffic impacts?
Much of the work will be performed at night in an effort to minimize traffic impacts. No lane closures will be permitted between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. Drivers may encounter lane shifts and periodic lane restrictions during the work. FDOT and its consultants will endeavor to limit traffic impacts whenever possible. You are encouraged to visit this website regularly for the latest traffic advisories.
Will I have any difficulty accessing businesses along US 98 during the work?
Driveways and access to private property will remain open at all times. If it becomes necessary, the contractor will install temporary signage directing drivers to business entrances.
Who is responsible for the construction work?
The construction project is being administered by the Florida Department of Transportation, District Three. Genesis CEI Services, Inc. of Crestview is providing construction engineering and inspection service in support of FDOT. The construction contractor is Panhandle Grading and Paving, Inc. of Pensacola, Fla.
